John Paterson

It is with deep regret that the club reports the passing of John paterson on 18th January 2012.

John was a founder member who, from the very outset, was a strong supporter of the club. This lasted until he sold his business and in his words “bought a wee hoose in Spain” Over recent years he spent winters there and returned for our summers although both he and his wife found difficulty in maintaining this lifestyle because of ill health. He enjoyed his sport and besides table tennis he was a member of Harburn Golf Club and Pumpherston Bowling Club.

John was blessed with a relaxed easy going attitude which made him a very popular whether in a social or sporting event. The expression “one of life’s gentlemen” would provide an apt description of his personality.

He is survived by a wife (Maria) and two children (Steven and Lesley) to whom we convey our sincerest condolences.

Liam McKeating (West of Scotland)

The club was particularly saddened to learn of the recent death of Liam Mckeating, former President of the West League, life member of TTS and a well loved figure within the sport for a large number of years. Liam did not play at the highest level but his influence encouraged many young players, including a club member, John McCulloch who contributed a tribute to Liam on the West of Scotland League’s website. It can be found at www.wosttl.org.uk/News/Story.aspx?SectionId=117a714b-9578-4c97-bc98-e6f3fcc3126f&StoryId=974ee8da-ef95-4de8-8142-e0657df43155

West Lothian Secondary Schools Championships 2011/12

Club members did particularly well in this year’s event. Winning the boys under 14 competition was Andrew Fischbacher while his sister Claire finished runner up to Julia MacDougall in the girls competition. Aaron Cameron won the under 16s. In the over 16s Robbie Fairley again won with Daniel MacKay again finishing runner up. Well done to you all.

Scottish Veterans Association

Congratulations to Drew Mclaren who finished in the runner up spot in the over 70 competition at the November 2011 Assessment. The next assessment is due to be held at Bathgate on Sunday 15th January 2012.

John Glen

The club was saddened to learn of the recent sudden death of John Glen who was well known in the Edinburgh & Lothians Table Tennis League not only as a player for Edinburgh Sports Club in the Premier Division but as its Match Secretary for several years. As a player he was both talented and competitive and as an official he was an articulate voice of reason within the League’s committee structure. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences go to all his family at this harrowing time.

Congratulations to the West Lothian team of George Flanagan, Lewis Hills and Barrie Hills who recently retained this trophy for the club with a worthy 5-3 victory against North Merchiston. A full report will soon be posted elsewhere on this website but, meantime, an article carried by the West Lothian Courier can be found at www.westlothiancourier.co.uk/west-lothian-sport-west-lothian-table-tennis-club-retain-handicap-cup-62405-28803032/

Malcolm (Malky) Hutton

It is with great sadness that we learned of the sudden and untimely death of Malky, the self styled “best left hander in Greenock”. More recently he has been a regular competitor in the Scottish Vets circuit and a member of Scotland’s over 50 team but he first came to prominence in the early 70s when he played in Renfrewshire and for Paisley YMCA. Although a fierce competitor he was also recognised as a true sportsman with many friends in the sport. He will be sadly missed.
